Pope John Paul II, whose birth name was Karol Józef Wojtyla, was the only Polish pope, the first non-Italian pope, and the third longest serving pope of the Catholic Church. During his reign as pope, he traveled extensively to more than 100 countries, which was more than any of his predecessors, and he was one of the most traveled world leaders in history. He reigned as Pope and Sovereign of the State of the Vatican City from October of 1978 until his death in April of 2005 almost 27 years later.
