Franklin Delano Roosevelt was often referred to affectionately by the American people as FDR. He was the 32nd President of the United States, and he was the only president who was elected to more than two terms in office. He was born into one of the wealthiest families in New York State and he grew up in an atmosphere of upper class economic privilege. In 1921, FDR contracted an illness that was believed to be polio and it caused him to become permanently paralyzed from the waist down. It was his heroic battle against the disease in which he refused to allow any handicap to limit him, and his subsequent championing of the cause of the American common people that earned him the respect of a sufficient number of Americans to elect him as President four times.
